Chapter 27 – Make a cold trail hot

Video conference

Day 8

WHEN BRANDT WAS SATISFIED that Richardson and Thomson couldn’t hear, he said, “Greg, the IT team needs to get into some serious hacking and cracking.

“I want you and your IT team to start up those computers and break into the airlines’ databases. I am not holding my breath that they will still have data about passengers of twenty-five years ago, but you need to find out if they do.

“Break into the Turkish and Swiss border control databases. I am a bit more optimistic that they might have data going back that far. Ushan Ozmert, I'm sure, left Feres under his real name, with his real passport. Did he indeed travel to Geneva? If so, where did he go after that?

“That’s to say, I want you to make a cold trail hot.”

“On it, boss,” said Greg with a big smile.

“Furthermore, just in case MI5 experiences a bout of morality about civil rights and privacy, I want you to put electronic tabs on Tony Parker. Dig into his finances as well as his social and private life. The same goes for Emily Hobson and Umut Ozmert. Nothing is sacred. We want everything you can get.”

“And Joanna Sanders,” said Rex.

All eyes darted to Rex.

Brandt spoke first. “The woman in the embassy in Athens. She knew. . .”

“All about our travel and accommodation arrangements,” Rex completed Brandt’s sentence for him.

Brandt took a deep breath and let it out slowly before he signaled to Martin and Ethan to rejoin the conference.

“Rex identified your fuckin’ mole,” Brandt growled without preamble.

“Who?” Richardson and Thomson asked in unison, ignoring Brandt’s uncharacteristic use of profanity.

“Joanna Sanders,” said Rex.

Thomson’s face had gone pallid. He whispered, “Of course, she made all travel arrangements for Rex and the team to Alexandroupolis.”

Rex nodded slowly. “And for Reece Cole when he went to Rhodes Island to meet with Almasi. Right?”

“Yep. She did. She’s in charge of all travel and accommodation arrangements and the associated expenses, including the per diems.”

“Dammit. As if we don’t have enough trouble as it is. Ethan, get counter-espionage onto it immediately,” said Richardson. “Arrest her on suspicion of espionage, keep her in solitary, no computer or phone access. We need to know who she’s been sending the information to. If she’s not the mole, then who else has access to that information?”

“On my way,” Thomson said.

“Ethan, before you go. Would she know where we are right now?” asked Rex.

“Let me think.” Thomson closed his eyes as he ran through the events of the past twelve hours. A few seconds later, he said, “No, I am sure she doesn’t. I personally made all arrangements for the safe house, and I didn’t tell anyone else. She doesn’t have access to that information. So, unless my telephone and office had been bugged since security swept it yesterday afternoon, you’re safe there for now.”

“Good.”

“If there’s nothing else, please excuse me, I’ve got a mole to catch.”

When Thomson left the conference, Rex said, “We’ll have to decide what we’re going to do with our prisoners.
